Thermal insulation in a garden gym: why it matters in summer and in winter

A garden gym is used twelve months a year, not only in the mild seasons. That means thermal insulation is not a secondary technical detail: it is what determines whether the space can be used comfortably in January and in August, or only for a few months a year.

This article explains why insulation matters so much and how it is resolved in a module designed for outdoor use all year round.

What happens without good insulation

An outdoor structure without adequate insulation behaves like the weather outside, with very little margin: intense heat in summer, cold in winter, and a thermal feeling that means the space is used less and less as the more demanding seasons go by.

This is common in generic garden sheds, designed for occasional storage, not for spending a full hour of physical effort in them every day of the year.

How the construction of a Supercubo Home resolves this

The structure: Galician pine CLT

The body of the module is built in cross-laminated timber (CLT) from Galician pine, treated specifically for outdoor use. The cross-layered structure of this material gives a natural thermal behaviour notably better than metal or PVC, without relying solely on added insulation.

The roof: sandwich panel

The roof is made of sandwich panel, a construction solution designed specifically to insulate the most exposed part of the module, the one that receives direct sun for the most hours and the one that gathers the most cold in winter.

The floor: 15 mm rubber

The interior floor has a 15 millimetre layer of rubber which, as well as its role as a training surface (cushioning, grip), helps keep the interior from taking on the temperature of the ground on which the module stands.

What you notice day to day

With this combination of materials, the aim is for the temperature difference between the inside of the module and the outside to be smaller than in a structure without insulation designed for this use: less heat built up in summer, less direct cold in winter.

This does not mean the interior keeps an identical temperature all year regardless of the weather outside — no module without active climate control achieves that — but that the thermal behaviour of the materials notably reduces those differences compared with a construction without this approach.

Frequently asked questions

Can a garden gym be used in winter?

Yes, a module with thermal insulation designed for outdoor use — such as the CLT structure and sandwich-panel roof of Supercubo Home — notably reduces the cold that reaches the interior compared with a shed without this approach.

And at the height of summer, does it not turn into an oven?

The thermal behaviour of CLT helps moderate the heat that builds up, although the orientation of the module and ventilation also influence the final result on the hottest days.

What role does the rubber floor play in insulation?

As well as serving as a training surface, the 15 mm rubber floor helps keep the interior from taking on the temperature of the ground on which the module rests.

Is additional climate control needed to use the gym all year?

It is not a requirement, although depending on the use and the climate zone, some people consider adding occasional climate control. The base insulation already significantly reduces extreme conditions.
