CLT timber module: what it is and why it is the best choice for an outdoor gym

Cross-laminated timber, CLT, is one of the most widely used materials in modern timber architecture, and it is the material Supercubo Home is built from. This article explains what it is, how it is made and why it is a particularly suitable choice for an outdoor gym.

What CLT timber is

Cross-laminated timber is made by gluing several layers of solid wood at right angles to one another. The process produces a panel that is structurally very stable, strong, and with thermal and acoustic performance markedly better than that of solid wood alone or of other lightweight building materials.

It is a common material in residential construction and in signature architecture precisely because of that combination of structural stability and visual warmth.

Why it insulates better than other materials

An outdoor gym is exposed to extreme temperatures in summer and winter, and to the noise of training itself. The cross-layered structure of CLT acts naturally as thermal and acoustic insulation, without the need for additional layers as thick as metal or PVC would require to achieve a similar result.

The result is a space that keeps a steadier temperature all year round and better dampens the noise of physical effort, both outwards and inwards.

Why it is sustainable

Timber is a renewable material, and making it into CLT panels generally requires less energy than producing materials such as steel or concrete. A well-maintained timber module also has a long service life, which reduces the need for replacement compared with materials that degrade sooner under continuous outdoor exposure.

Why it fits the idea of a ‘designer gym’

Beyond its technical properties, CLT has a visual and tactile quality that metal or plastic do not offer. Its texture, its natural colour and the way it ages over time bring a sense of warmth that suits the idea of a space conceived for wellbeing, not only for performance.

It is, in short, a material that meets a technical need (insulation, durability) and an aesthetic one (warmth, design) at the same time, something rare in modular construction.

Frequently asked questions

What sets CLT apart from ordinary solid wood?

CLT is made by gluing several layers of wood at right angles, which gives it greater structural stability and better thermal and acoustic performance than a solid wood board not treated in this way.

Does CLT stand up well to the weather?

Yes, provided the structure receives the right exterior treatment and maintenance. It is a common material in modern outdoor construction, including residential architecture exposed to the weather all year round.

Is CLT a sustainable material?

It is a renewable material and its manufacture generally requires less energy than other building materials such as steel or concrete, although its final sustainability also depends on the origin and forest management of the wood used.

Why does Supercubo Home use CLT and not metal?

Because it insulates better against cold, heat and noise, and because it brings an aesthetic warmth that answers to the concept of ‘architecture for wellbeing’ behind the product.
